Like many other venues in the neighbourhood, Paradox is housed inside a renovated old building – in this case, it’s an old stable that was once owned by Amsterdam’s fire department. Besides selling some of the finest space cakes in the city, Paradox also serves a wide variety of beverages such as home-made milkshakes and hot chocolate topped with whipped cream. The owners are eager to support Amsterdam’s local art scene and organise small on-site exhibitions throughout the year, which means there are usually a number of artworks on display. We went there several times for the coffee shop and drinks and unfortunately this friday night we were not treated well as the first time.
In terms of merch, you can cover your house in Bulldog memorabilia and still go back for round two. Well the menu doesn’t split up what’s Indica and what’s sativa. We know that purists will more than likely say it doesn’t matter… but all their competitors are doing things to make them stand out.

This guard’s work is to alienate customers. Zero communication skills, and cant talk. Your only option is to leave the shop unfortunately. Tobacco and low grade hedge clippings at best. Very poor, the canal probably has more THC in it. I had never been to a place like this before and did not know that there is no alcohol-but there is something better…milkshakes!
The Bulldog™ Havri (coffeeshop)
When I was photographing the menu and purchasing some White Widow, I struck up a conversation with the man behind the dispensary booth. I forget his name now, but he has been working there since Bulldog opened 38 years ago. When I mentioned that some – like myself – had viewed Bulldog as strictly tourist-oriented, he scoffed and said that that’s just not true. In fact, he told me that 40% of more of their business is local Dutch people, which is one reason why they carry so many staple Dutch marijuana strains. The weed is not flushed and got unhealthy nutrients which CANT be smoked!!!!
That’s when we noticed there was an exact amount of 5€ charged extra. We told him this and he tried to sell us his big scheme deal. He told us that the beer we ordered was extra 2€ and that the menu was wrong. We told him that we don’t want to pay extra than what we had seen in the menu and that, even with the 2€ extra, we were paying for 5€. At this very moment the guy turned his back on us and said us that he wouldn’t do anything and that it is as it is.
Making this our go to place in Amsterdam. Visited in daylight, friendly staff, good breakfast and great location. A good “welcome to Amsterdam” I’ll say. As a tourist customer service is always an important factor.
I visit Amsterdam a few times every year and I did visit in 2023 and saw loads of coffeeshops and English-speaking tourists in all of them. Funnily enough, the only difference in the name is the lack of space ” “. Not many people in Holland call the coffee-selling establishments “coffee shops”, they are usually called cafes. This was the worst coffeeshop we’ve been to in Amsterdam. They have a passive aggressive waiter who made us feel very unwelcomed to the place, he was all the time surrounding us and asking are you gonna have something to drink?
It lays claim to being the first of its kind in the city and was formerly in a basement. Nowadays it has a graffiti riddled front face and a small seating area… but it is packed with good intentions. With its striking yellow logo and multi-expansion, international business front, almost everyone in the world knows who/what/where the Bulldog is.
The shop itself is very small and is located in the basement of the property. The bad reviews basically consisted of poop emoji’s. Coffeeshop Popeye is located in the heart of Amsterdam, just a 5 minute walk from Amsterdam Central station. The psychedelic wall paintings will surely get your head spinning whilst smoking some weed. However, coffeeshop Popeye also gets accused of spraying flavour on their weed. Founded in 1975 by Henk de Vries, this is the 3rd coffeeshop in Amsterdam.
A typical menu has a bit of explanation regarding the origins of the smoke. The Bulldog just leaves something to be desired in this respect. Bonus points for being digital enough to display on screens though. Nice, peacefull place, dogs allowed, strains are very good, and staff is super fast and polite. İ have mixed feelings about this place actually. And İ don’t know how to put my feelings into words.
Probably the best Coffeeshop near Amsterdam Centraal area. Claimed to be the first coffeeshop in Amsterdam, the place lives up to its name. Small sitting area, but if you are lucky, you can find a spot and spend hours getting high.
Be careful because the stuff can hit you really strong if you’re not used to it. If you know anything about Amsterdam, then most likely you know that already. But hey, if you’re on this page thinking it has information about Amsterdam’s best cafes, I’m sorry to say that you’re on the wrong page! In the next section, you’ll find out why. Some tourists think Amsterdam is a city of sin, but in truth it is a city of freedom.
The place is not too big and was very crowded when I was there. The place looks very cool with the outside covered in graffiti and is worth a look, even if it is very touristy. Amnesia, on the Herengracht canal, offers guests a wide range of standard, connoisseur and award-winning strains coffee shop bulldog of cannabis. Home-made space cakes are also available from the bar, alongside non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Coffeeshops in the Netherlands, including The Bulldog in Amsterdam, are required to obtain their supply of cannabis illegally as production and distribution is still prohibited.
We then asked can we at least have tap water, then all of a sudden they had bottles of water to sell! We also noticed other people had soft drinks. Rather than argue, we thought we’d just pay and go somewhere else, but then we got the bill of just over €50, which she confirmed was correct! That didn’t seem to be the norm in Amsterdam, all the other places we went did not charge these prices. From the moment we arrived until the end. At the end we ordered our bill and the guy just appeared with the machine for the payment saying the total.
